CARRIEANN THUNELL: BLUE-GRAY CURRENTS

BLUE-GRAY CURRENTS is a collection of observational haiku inspired by the natural world. All proceeds from the book will be donated to the Olympic Park Associates, serving the Olympic National Park in Washington State, USA.

The haiku are divided into four sections, focussing on: The Parks, The Mountains, The Beaches and The Valleys. The haiku are written with a sharp observational eye. In this first instance, looking at something quite ordinary from a slightly different angle:

	autumn poplars —
	ducks ride reflections
	round the lake.
Light is very present in many of these haiku, as in these two:
	rumbled dark
	of low storm clouds —
	a rising tern.

		evening sun
		lights each summer
		wave in turn.
Although the haiku are mostly observational, some do go deeper and the general perilous state of the environment is touched on in this haiku, which I felt was the most powerful in the collection:
	a headless sea lion
	stains wet sand —
	the setting sun.
But if we are to learn to protect the environment we need to learn to love it and to do that we need to know how to see nature, which is something CarrieAnn Thunell can do very well indeed as evidenced not only by her haiku but by her stunning illustrations.
