PICKINGS

Poetry from NHI publications

THE WRONG ANGER
Not the rage at enlarged bellies
or the struggle against missiles,
not the fist at the Creator
or disdain for all this luck

but the sudden defence
the portcullis of ego
slid ready for blows

when the work decays
the effort's ignored
the hard words come

when the unfair dice
condones fine fury
the anger that sneers

when the keep of self
turns blind slits out
undefeated and dead

when the curtain walls
turn inwards to guard
their private hurt
