GRANDAD AT 5 A.M.
he would get up
all grainy
in the low light
pull on boots
and do a little shuffle
to himself
swallow some whiskey
put a lamp on
shove wood into the furnace
feel the house
start to be flannel
settle into light
before the others rose
get a tune
inside his head awhile
and feel it
in his fingers
for the fiddle
later on
when one of them would play
twangy chords
on chipped keys
of the old upright
