CORNELIA ATANASIU: THE MIRROR IS FALLING

The poems are translated from the Romanian into Japanese (Ana Maria Florescu) and English (Florin Daniel Onea). There are some very nice haiga by the poet as well. Cornelia Atanasiu, from Targoviste is a horticulturist engineer.

There has been some very interesting haiku works emerging from Romania in recent years and this book is one of them. The style of the poetry is distinctively Romanian with an emphasis on human input:

	Roar in the gulf —
	swallows in the evening
	kissing waves
Many of the poems are surprising in the images they offer:
The white in the night —
	the foot of the lighthouse
	slashed by the waves

		Multicolored bridge
lost in the water of the mill —
		beneath the rainbow

	Under the pen
	the soak ink —
	the first sketches
I think it best to view this book as a collection arising from the work of a poet over a number of years, showing her understanding and reverence of the form.
