Notes:

  • Upper case indicates words on the pavement.
  • Lowercase is used for descriptions of chosen symbols and objects found.
  • All the words on the pavement had to be included in order and in relation to each other.
  • I was free to exclude signs and symbols (or I'd go completely mad).
  • I only included objects which I felt confident enough to pick up and take home (to place in a special perspex topped box).
  • The 'red herrings' are metal fish-shaped plates fixed to the pavement by the council as part of a tourist trail.
  • It was mere chance that the "t" and "e" of "water" were worn away, probably over many years, to spell "war."
